Thanks for the warning, after seeing ads for them in several pretty big newspapers I had considered switching to them too because of their seemingly cheaper rates than what I’m currently using.

I wish to add my voice to this post as I think that 1 and 1 sucks big time also. My very first experience with them, trying to by a domain they wanted me to fax them copies of my passport just to verify my credit card. First time ever in my life I've ever had that problem. I now pay GoDaddy every year for domains and renewal and absolutely hate seeing the name 1 and 1.

I am currently trying to work out how to cancel my simple plan with one and one (twats).

I have had a shared server with Hostgator for a number of years and find their customer service great. If I was ever to go to a dedicated server they would be my first choice

I haven't read the whole article yet but I can agree they are awful!!! Only when I paid I found out that I need to pay more to put my HTML and I never managed to upload my files through ftp. I consider my money with them just wasted and now I see I can have more problems!

You need to be able to handle shell – if you can't, just totally forget about dedicated servers, or even VPS. There are lots of tutorials online for every flavor of Linux and every situation.
Don't learn on a dedicated box – much better to learn on a small VPS.

I wasn't using Maintenance mode for that long, and paid a huge price to a bug I still haven't sorted out.

I will be moving from one VPS to another though… more on that to come

Matt, I am not than big of a geek to do updates via shell access- and I believe I am not the only one… The timing was crucial and I did not even had the time to request the shell access. I probably could have done something, after all Andy Beard had his blog in a maintenance mode for a few months.

I my opinion the problem with 1 & 1, GoDaddy and few others is that they are gotten too big. Smaller companies seem to offer better services and care for their clients more.

I am still looking for a dedicated host, I know that eventually I will end up needing one. 1 & 1 is out of the question.

Doh! Also YUM or APT-GET would have had your MySQL up to date in about 60 seconds. I'm wincing for you because I know what it is like to have a money grabbing company refuse to stop charging you. It's quite arrogant to assume that every customer even owns a fax. I don't – it's old technology and to costly for no real value. I'm surprised the US has no customer protection laws against this sort of thing. Odds are in the UK you could have alleged fraud and won if only on “unfair contract terms” of contract law – check if the US has a similar law.
