There it is! 11th position on Google for my first name!
A few weeks ago, strange idea wondered into my head. I decided to experiment and see if I can achieve any improvement when it comes to rank for my own name. The task at hand was not an easy one since Google has plenty of pages that come up for “Vlad”. Good amount of them of course have nothing to do with me but “Vlad the Impaler”. So I decided to throw him a little competition. The man is dead anyway!
When I started this experiment about two weeks ago, my site came would show on the pages 8-13 (with 50 results per page) or between 400th-600th positions. Today my sites shows in the eleventh place on Google for Vlad.
Few things helped to achieve this along the way. I was more active commenting on other blogs, while majority of blogs that I have commented are using “nofollow” but there were few that are generous in spreading the “love”. I also added under every single post on my blog the following “Posted by Vlad“.
I am not sure if my site will hold this position for a long time, but it sure brought me some satisfaction to see my site move up about 90 positions a day.

Congratulations, Vlad. I don't know, I don't think that it'll be too difficult for you to defend that position. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you make it onto the first page eventually (with 10 results per page, of course).

Thanks Chris,
I think this just proved to me that with a little planning and effort it is not that difficult to rank in Google after all. I am not sure though about the first 10 positions. We'll see.

Congratulations Vlad – I tried to do a search for my fist name but after about 10,000 I gave up *grins*

Thanks Mark (from Bloglyne),
I amm not sure if I will benefit from it though. Trffic geerated by this keyword will be accidental to say the least. But it showed me that you can inporove rankings a bit for other keywors as well.

Well done Vlad
It's a nice result to have even if it isn't a big money generator. I'm always checking how I rank for my first name too. I do well in google.co.uk but still got some work to do on the .com version!

By the way, I have been looking up on the Internet and I have found some tools which are really cools to monitor the positioning of the competition, as well as seeing their tips and tricks. If you are interested, I advised to you have a look. It seems they are free: http://www.lineared.com/es/recuperar/datos-posiciones-google-msn-yahoo.htm
