What Would You Do With $200?
July 8, 2007 – 7:25 amI can’t even count how many times I have seen different contests in the blogosphere. Most of them offer a monetary prize to the author of 1000th comment. I have seen them on blogs that vary in size, age and authority. I am guessing there is some value in these contests, but I would really like to know what kind of value? Is it a good “linkbait opportunity”? It increase the number of comments, at least on the post announcing the contest. Does it increase the number of subscribers? I think these questions are valid enough to give it a try.
So here it goes. I am announcing a contest in which you can win $200. Here are the rules:
In order to participate in this contest you must either comment on this blog or link from your blog to to this article. The author of 100th comment will win $100. If the comment happens to be in a form of a trackback/pingback, the owner of the blog wins $200.You ABSOLUTELY MUST ACCEPT money via PayPal- if you are not able to accept payment from me via PayPalCAN NOT PARTICIPATE in this contest.youThis opportunity will remain open for the life of this blog, unless 100th comment will come first.
UPDATE: FOLLOWING ARE NEW RULES FOR THIS CONTEST
- To participate in this contest all you need is to leave a comment or link to this post from your blog.
- The winner of this contest will receive $200 and will be determined by a drawing. (The drawing will be held on September 1)
- There is no limit to the number of comments you can make (more comments/trackbacks better odds to win).
- To participate you must have a valid PayPal account to receive the money.
- This contest ends on September 1st at 0:00 am (US Eastern Time) - entries made past this time will be disregarded.
I think it would be unrealistic fro me to expect 1000 comments even in the post like this one. Also it will make this contest to run its course quicker. Of course if I like the results, there will be more like this one in the future.
To make this contest a little more interesting you need to answer one simple question, either here or on your blog while linking to this post. And the question is :
What would (or can) you do with $200?

(yes it does say WE LIKE BROCCOLI on this $200 bill
)
I really look forward to read all the answers and to to start off here are the few things I can do with $200:
- $200 can fill the tank of my car 4 times.
- $200 can buy us about two weeks of groceries.
- I can easily purchase 20 domain names.
- $200 can probably pay for electricity in our condo.
- Finally I have a freedom to give this $200 to some one who needs it more than I do.
Most importantly, I probably would take $200 for granted. I the country of my origin some people need to work few months to earn $200.
Now back to the contest. I will not be answering to the comments on this post. I will however closely monitor and moderate the comments on this post. If you have submitted a valid comment but it was filtered as spam, please let me know right away so I can act accordingly. If you linking to this post from your blog, please check if the trackback is given to you. It if is not, please contact me right away so I can act accordingly.
Enjoy and good luck!
UPDATE: YOU MAY ENTER THIS CONTEST TEN TIMES: 1.Five Comments here. 2. Five Links from your blog to this post. THRE IS NO LIMIT ON HOW MANY TIMES YOU CAN ENTER THIS CONTEST- EACH COMMENT WILL BE COUNTED AS SEPARATE ENTRY

I’d probably take half and use the other 100 for my own contest heh.
By Brown Baron on Jul 8, 2007
I’d use it to further my online ventures with some linkbuilding campaigns. That way it’s more of an investment than a expense… Gotta use your money smart!

The $200 will go into my “PS3 fund”, that is the target I’ve set for my blog for this year - use the blog earnings to buy that sleek PS3.

So, whomever gets the 100th comment on this post? If that’s what we’re going for, it’ll be a while. This should make 13. lucky 13.

By kelli in the mirror on Jul 10, 2007
Don’t enter me in the contest, because I’d just blow it on dinner entertaining a client. But I had to say, I’m linking to this just for the graphic. That’s funny/cool as hell.
By Tinu on Jul 11, 2007
I would take the $200 and continue to run a blog contest with it. On another note, I love running contests and rewarding my visitors. Not only do I get to see blog activity, but it’s also fun to see the increase in comments and what is said.
By Zac Johnson on Jul 11, 2007
I would get myself a new domain for my blog.

By peach on Jul 11, 2007
If I had $200 I would be able to buy some real groceries for a change rather than just Peanut Butter and Ramen Noodles! Did someone say “steak”???
By Linda on Jul 11, 2007
I think this is a pretty cool contest, but could I not just sit and enter comments until i was the 100th? it seems weird, becuase i can look and see, OK, I’m 38, no where near 100, so why comment?
regardless, If I had two hundred dollars inmy pay pall account, I would buy (finally) the PENTAX Optio W20 digital camera. It is waterproof and dust proof, perfect for a mom on the go!
even though i know I am no where near being the 100th comment, I thought I would leave this in support of what seems to be a really cool plan!
By bluepaintred on Jul 11, 2007
IF I win this contest, then I will….hmmm….put it in my purse and use it when my first need for money comes.
By jacob martin on Jul 11, 2007
I would put it towards my credit card payments.
By Kat on Jul 12, 2007

By Wolf Stone on Jul 13, 2007
I will buy a site with $100 and promote it with the rest.

Hi,
I see you are running a contest. You might want to visit the blog on my link. You can submit this contest, in your own words, at the Blog-Contests.net. I am actually advertising with Adwords so you should get decent traffic from this initiative, plus a link to your blog!
thanks,
C Fernandes
By CFernandes on Jul 19, 2007
OMG, this is almost crawling. I can’t wait to win the 200
By André on Jul 20, 2007
Interesting! I would either take 200 and dump it back to all my sites, or if Im feeling adventurous finally by myself a nice proper snooker cue with a sturdy case
By Web Presence on Jul 21, 2007
On second thought the money would go towards a macbook for my wife.
By macewan on Jul 21, 2007
Did I win? Nice contest — I hope it brings a boatload of traffic to your site.
By Matt Keegan on Jul 23, 2007
Vlad, I am not sure if this would really reach a 100 anytime soon. Its been on 52 for 10 days now.
If I may offer a suggestion, you could split the 200 into 4 and give 50 for each milestone comment, like 75, 100 and so on.
By Vijay on Aug 2, 2007
Vijay,
Thanks. I do think this is going really slow. I will most certainly consider your suggestion. Now that I know that there is at least one person interested in this contest.
I also was thinking to set and end date and then decide the winner(s) by drawing, this would give every one who participated so far an equal chance to win. Thanks for stopping by!
By Vlad on Aug 2, 2007
I agree. I like the drawing idea. (mostly because my comments are nowhere near the 25,50,75, 0r 100 spots…)
By thatedeguy on Aug 2, 2007
I too support the drawing idea.
By Joyce Babu on Aug 2, 2007
Thanks for considering my suggestion. The drawing idea is good as well. It would be nice if the drawing was with multiple prizes instead of one big pot. This would ensure that more people may go home as winners.
By Vijay on Aug 3, 2007
I woudl add it to my million fund and probably reinvest it in adbux referrals!
By rachel on Aug 13, 2007
I’m in and I’ll announce it on my blog. The only problem is I’ll have to lurk to try and be #100!
By hotdogman on Aug 13, 2007
With 200 dollars I’d finally take my wife out to dinner somewhere that didn’t require a combo meal and a number to order.
By sirjorge on Aug 14, 2007

I would use $200 to take my family out for a treat - we don’t get too many treats….
By Jay on Aug 14, 2007
With $200 I would buy textbooks since school is almost starting for me!
By Jess on Aug 14, 2007
I like the new rules, should be interesting to see how many links/comments you’ll get.
With $200, I could buy some new clothes!
By Jess on Aug 17, 2007
Its good that you have fixed an deadline for the competition. I am waiting eagerly for the drawing
By Joyce Babu on Aug 17, 2007
Yo, Vlad.
Well, I`ll let to you the pleasure to find out where I`m from
What i`ll do with 200 bucks ?
1- if those are exactly ones on picture, I`ll frame them and send to paypal`s big boss ..
(made in 1998, all original inside)
2- if those are real USD, I`ll probably upgrade my IBM 400Mhz pc
As I also run a (new) contest on my blog, I have in my plans to request you to be part of jury on one (or more) of next editions ..
By valentin on Aug 17, 2007
Hi Vlentin.
????? ??????????
- ok it is not working. but it was “dobro pozhalovat’” in russian.
Did I guess it right? No, unfortunately you will not be able to frame. Should you win it will be deposited into your PayPal account, so unless you use your debit card most likely you will not see or touch them
By Vlad on Aug 17, 2007
Sorry, man, I don`t understand russian language.
As about paypal account, sorry .. My country is in “Send Money to Anyone in the Growing PayPal Network” list (yet, fortunately, not Russia) - link = https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-approved-signup-countries-outside -. This mean my paypal account can not receive money .. even if I use or not CC or DC .. So. all I can hope is I`ll not be the winner
By valentin on Aug 18, 2007
I would use half of the money for savings and the other half for some tutoring from Kelly McCausey She is a super tutor in internet marketing and helping WAHM with their biz. Marie
By marie on Aug 18, 2007
I think I would spare them…
…It would be to reimburse me for the $205 ticket I had last month while I was just passing through USA (from Canada to Canada around the Ontario lake) for the first time I entered USA (since I’m french that’s really too bad because I’m not really used to cross oceans on week-ends to visit USA ^^)

By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
All I need to do is comment?
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
And there is no limit?
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
I think I can handle those rules.
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
You must be getting sick of people not commenting b/c they don’t want to waste their 5 comment limit.
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
So I think I can help you out here and get the ball rolling…..
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
and rolling…..
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
I guess I could get you up to 100 comments TODAY!
By Karen on Aug 20, 2007
Karen,
You comments were caught by Spam Karma plugin.
Yes all you have to do is to comment. I do however prefer that at least one comment would answer this question:
What would (or can) you do with $200?
That is part of the rules. I wanted to restrain from commenting about it, but know those who follow will have a chance to correct it.
By Vlad on Aug 20, 2007
I am planning to buy a new laptop. I think I’ll have some use of it
By Joyce Babu on Aug 20, 2007
Ah, thanks, Vlad. Don’t want to upset the other bloggers.
Hmmm…..what would I do with $200? I’d probably spend it on my dh. Sure, I could say I’d treat myself to some spa treatments, or some new clothes. But when push came to shove, I’d probably end up spending it on someone else…..most likely the hubby.
Although I might splurge and get one new comfy sweatshirt for myself for this fall!
By Karen on Aug 22, 2007
at this point: bills
jon
By jon on Aug 22, 2007
I’d head to Amazon and buy a bunch of books off my wish list. (That sort of spree is long overdue!)
By Gracie on Aug 25, 2007
I am glad that the rules have changed Vlad, however as you see above, a few comments seem to have been made with the ultimate purpose of getting the numbers up. I still say that 5 entries be the maximum for consideration for every person.
There are quite a lot of people who have no life out there and they would comment here with and spam the blog..
If you would consider a max of 5 entries from everyone, then it would give everyone an equal footing in the drawing
By Vijay on Aug 26, 2007
Hmmm to be a little original.. I would burn the $200 and but video tape it on youtube then.. hopefully itll be the most stupidest thing to do.. gain a lot of comments and lead traffic back to my blog. hahahahaha.. mueah haha i’m sneaky
By CASH for COMMENTS on Aug 28, 2007
i like how it switches the numbers with 4 and 7. $200… ill a brand new ipod.. and SMASH it.
By CASH for COMMENTS on Aug 28, 2007
I would use the money to learn and better myself. This would be in the form of education and starting a blog.
By Josiah on Aug 29, 2007
Alternatively, I would use it to pay application fees for college admission.
By Josiah on Aug 29, 2007
Or, for fun, I’d buy myself some nice stuff on eBay
By Josiah on Aug 29, 2007
hey count me in
By thien on Aug 30, 2007
