What’s Up With Your URL?

February 24, 2007 – 4:14 pm

A fellow blogger Mark from Bloglyne.com have asked me following question:

What ranking were you trying to get by registering your URL??? *grins* that has got to be the WORST URL name I have ever seen.(http://www.volodymyrzablotskyy.com)

I think this is one of those “loaded” questions. So bare with me since it may take me a while to get my point across.

When I have purchased this domain, I was not an affiliate at the time and knew nothing about online marketing. It just sounded so good and self indulging to have my first and last name as a URL that I simply could not resist. Would I choose it now, probably not. Who the hell is going to remember this kind of URL? Am I sorry I chose this URL absolutely not. I have learned many useful things marketing this URL and it has become very sentimental to me.

If you noticed that what title tags contain (”My Affiliate Journey”) for my website has nothing to do with what is found in URL. If you are curious enough try to search the big 3 (Google, Yahoo and MSN) you will see that for the term “My Affiliate Journey” my site is showing up on the first page of all three search engines. There are few other keyword combination that my site ranks well also. So there you go Mark partial answer to your question.

There is more to Mark’s question though. Every time you read anything to do with choosing URL for your website, you inevitably come across a suggestion that a your URL should contain keyword or even a combination of keywords. Well, in affiliate marketing it is not so easy to find this kind of URL. At least in my experience I found that most of any “good” URLs have been already taken.

My personal advise is not to fixate on a URL to necessarily contain keywords. If you create a website with the worst possible URL but provide an outstanding quality content people will begin to link to you, to bookmark you to subscribe to your feeds. They will do all these things without even noticing what exactly is your URL.

Here is another example this article has a title “What’s Up With Your URL?”. This what will be included in the title tags as well as in permalink for this post. And although I have no intention to rank for this post, I will not be surprised that a week from now or so, if you search “What’s Up With Your URL?” in Google, this post may show up in on the first page of the search results. Just out of curiousity I will follow this post closely in search engines and report back in a week or so.
