Mine is set to count them over last year. If you reduce it to let say last 3 days it cuts down on the possibility of gaming. Not on my blog, but on the blogs that recieve 100 of comments a day. Sure there still be those who "don't behave", but you can restrict them from showing up bu filtering their url or e-mail address. BTW, your thinking out loud is welcomed.
