I am fortunate enough to live in a state (New Jersey) where the lawmakers have not attempted to explore the ways to hurt affiliates. But I am not holding my breath. In fact I am a little surprised New Jersey did not follow our neighbors to the East, the New York State.
I admit that I know very little about the issue and still am trying to educate myself more should the time come for NJ affiliates to take a stand. If you are in the same shoes as I am, I highly recommend Geno Prussakov’s interview with Jen Goode of JGoode Designs about Colorado Internet Sales Tax.
Here is what Jenn says affiliates can do to have a better chance fighting the “Internet Sales Tax Laws” in the future:
- Educate your merchants. Let them know that the Colorado [Instead of Colorado insert the state you live in] internet tax does not apply to affiliates nor nexus.
- Get to know your legislators so you can educate them on the way this industry works, most really have no comprehension of the enormity of this industry let alone how it all works.
- Build relationships within the industry so that when issues like this arise, you’re not alone trying to figure out what to do next.
It is amazing what Colorado affiliates managed to accomplish and we should follow their example in the fight in our won respected states.
I think/hope we have less chance of seeing it here in NJ with Governor Christie, since he campaigned on reducing, rather than increasing taxes, and being more fiscally responsible.
I sure hope so Shawn. I think more about our state representatives, where Christie’s party is in minority. If this to ever take place during Christie’s administration I sure hope he vetoes it.
Rhode Island may overturn that mistake of the “Affiliate Tax”. They are not making any money lol
They would have been more successful just raising taxes for affiliates, but they cut us off from making allot of money and drove some affiliates to use a address in another state they legally have property. They loose bigtime. Rhode Island is just a greedy for tax dollars, and think cutting off jobs raise money lol.. oh they are also dumb.
affiliate or not, tax man wants the money. tax man doesn’t care how you make it.
The only one person cares about our and that’s only we. Tax representative doesn’t care that how you managed and how much work hard to get money.
For now, I do not experience having any problem with tax sales law in the internet because what I am paying in the internet is fair enough with my daily internet use. However, if there are cases where I need to pay more, then I will understand that and I am willing to pay.
I have been trying to understand these laws for ages and have given up! Just seems like a confused mess to me.
Lucky to those people who are not affected by Internet Law Tax Law yet. But I believe that it will applied sooner since jobs are becoming more online than offline. So, we better prepare for it.
Well, I think a year later I can tell that internet tax is closer than ever to us.
