A week ago, after reading Yaro’s article about improving alexa ratings I went ahead and installed the widget on my websites.
Unfortunately not every one agrees about how important or non-important Alexa ratings are. Many people, including Yaro, have stated that Alexa rating should be looked at and understood as tool of measuring the trend rather than an absolute authority about your website’s traffic. You really do not need Alexa to do that.
Be it as it is, good or bad, Alexa rating can be important factor if you are trying to monetize on your website via AdBrite, Tex-Link-Ads or similar services.
My experiment with Alexa rating consisted from installing Alexa website widget on my websites and see whether or not it will affect the Alexa ratings. While initially it seamed as the widget was helping my ratings, I think now I have more data to say that widget along is not enough to improve your Alexa ratings.
Unfortunately the installation of Alexa widget coincided with the time when I began to use Alexa Toolbar. Initially change was reflected across all my websites, but after a while I noticed that websites that are powered buy WordPress continued to improve in Alexa, the rest of my websites did not. I think the reason behind is that every time I post on my WordPress or even do some maintenance work, Alexa counts it as visits and activity to be reflected in their statistics. If your are posting daily on your website, with Alexa Toolbar you can improve your ratings dramatically. The other benefit of Alexa Toolbar is that if you are Amazon affiliate, it can actually help you to make some extra cash, should you create and begin to offer your visitors a “customized” Alexa Toolbar.
While I am not in favor of using some toolbars be it Alexa, Google, Yahoo or others. If you really care about your Alexa raking, using Alexa Toolbar is not that bad of idea after all.
As to widget itself, as I see it, it useful only to show off your statistics on your website, I dont believe it will improve your ratings. As a matter of fact last few days, if people click through to see datailed statistics about your site on Alexa they will end up on Amazons website. Is it Amazons way to raise their Christmas revenue? Probably, but it deas not benefit my visitors who may be interested to see detailed stattistics about my wbesite at Alexa’s website.
