Reading Andy Beard’s article about trackbacks, brought to my memory the time when I first learned about WordPress. Among many things that you may read about WordPress and blogging is the benefit of allowing your readers to comment on your blog and allowing your blog to trackback to the posts where your blog/posts where mentioned.
Andy puts it very simply:
If your blog doesn’t trackback, I am less inclined to link to you and join your conversation. I might just comment, but that doesn’t send my readers to see what you wrote either.
While from the very beginning of my “blogging” I allowed comments along with trakcbacks, there was something missing. I did not see people commenting on my blog, nor was I mentioned in other peoples posts. After a while I came to conclusion that I simply had nothing to contribute to the conversation or things that I wrote where not relevant.
During the last two weeks I discovered that although I allowed both comments as well as trackbacks on my blog, every link in the comment area was “marked” by “nofollow”. Even on my blog a adicussion over “nofollow” took place, to which Andy had contributed greatly. While I do not believe to have written anything extraordinary, I tend to think that the above mentioned discussion would less likely to take place if I still had “nofollow”.
So why did I have “nofollow”? The answer is simple, I did not know better. I actually did not realize that WordPress out of the box had “nofollow” in comment area and in order to overcome this you need a DoFollow PlugIn. It was certainly not a pleasure to learn that in a sense I never said thank you to many of my commenters in the past, or even if I did say it was not a “thank you”. Hopefully now a proper “thank you” will reach those who commented or blogged about my entries in the past.
This being said, there is an experiment going out of which I would like to be a part. Here is to Irish in Denmark.
I believe dofollow keeps the blog moderated and for me, a blog without a moderator is worthless. congratulations on dofollow!

Rafaela,
It does not take much effort to moderate. For example I have deleted your link. It literally took me less than 5 seconds.
Thanks for stopping by.

I have considered whether to remove it or not. I don't think it will help discussion purposes because very rarely do people check for a nofollow. But its the right thing to do so I will remove it from my blogs once i figure out how to do it 🙂

Nice catch I must say! Beware of the moderation power of Vlad! :p

Kudos to your ruthless moderation, Vlad.

Shaun,
Spam Karma does the most of the moderation for me. 😉
I'm still using Akismet. When I get around to it, Spam Karma is the next thing I'll try.
