Few days ago it was Google – today it is Microsoft. I have been running Ubuntu on my PCs for a few months. On my desktop Ubuntu is the only OS, however my laptop currently can run Windows and two versions of Ubuntu.
The only reason I was hanging onto Windows was the Widnows Movie Maker. However today or maybe yesterday, Microsoft did something that pushed my patience to its limit. Evidently the most recent Microfots update pack screwed the GRUB and I am no longer able to choose my OS on startup. I am sure there is a way to correct this but instead I went on and tried to take a closer look at Kino– the Linux video editor.
What I have discovered surprised me:
- Kino is as good as the Microsoft Movie Maker. Actually it may be even better.
- Kino integrates perfectly with Blip.tv.
Bye bye Windows!
Update: After writing this post I came across Dan Dennedy’s Blog– a must read blog if you have chosen Kino as your video editing software.

I have been using various linux distros for a few years. I finally settled on ubuntu when the 6.06 LTS came out. But I made a full migration after I had a read through the EULA that came with vista, as well as reading about MS plans for a modular OS I decided I did not like the way MS was going with their OS, and it was best to make the switch now.
I am now on 7.10 and have not looked back.

I feel your pain. I've quit using windows and have zero regret. Ubuntu is a great OS, Free, and capable of everything I personally need it for. So more power to you 🙂

I remember seeing somewhere a command to repair the bootloader. *rummages through bookmarks*
Brainiac,
I think it is too late now…. I have dumped the Windows.

I get so sick of this ranting about microsoft sucks. I tried Ubuntu several times on my laptops and really gave it a fair shake. It consumed just as many resources, the common wifi driver concerns and the supposed support programs just are not as good as all the windows based freebies out there.
so unimpressed by the world changing ubuntu and XP still rocks. If you got a version you like running well forget the updates and you won't have to whine so much…
oh yea I forgot Fire Fox is the greatest OS too. it never has issues…
…and I got some land in Arizona you may be interested in…
It's not Fire Fox, it's Firefox, and it's not an OS, it's a browser.
Nor do I doubt you got taken for a ride buying Arizona beach front property.
Thanks Ghosty!
I hesitated to answer it. But you nailed it!
i am using dos 6.22. enuff said …
Good to hear. I've been trying to come up with a linux alternative to Adobe Premiere and then I can finally ditch the windows partition on my families computer.
By the way, if you want to fix grub just boot a live cd, mount your root partition and go in a command line and execute
sudo grub-install –root-directory=(mount point of root partition) /dev/(harddrive to install grub to)
Then just make sure the boot flag is turned on on your root partition (you can do this easily with parted or gparted).
After an unhappy marriage of around 10 years, I left Windows a year ago.
I'm using OpenSuse Linux 10.3, best thing I ever did. I can do *everything* on Linux that I did on Windows.
I cannot believe that a company like Microsoft is allowed to peddle sub standard software like Vista to the world wide public.
Check out my site.
